Oh, forgot to mention that today I got a contributor's copy of the Russian translation of THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF SERIOUSLY COMIC FANTASY. Very handsome edition: hardcover, surprisingly thin given how many pages the darned thing is. I was pleased to be able to identify myself in the ToC, and confirmed this since the bio note at the start of my story did then have my name and birth year in English.

I know there're Russian editions of some other anthologies I don't have, so it was nice to get this one.

But then, it's always been a pleasure working with Mike Ashley (the editor of this anthology).

How many languages have your books been translated into, do you know? I think that's so great.

There's a difference between what languages my WRITING has been translated into, versus what languages my BOOKS have been translated into.

For instance, I've had maybe 10 or so stories translated into French, but I've not yet had a book in French (although one is forthcoming later this year, a French edition of my poetry collection FAIRY TALES FOR WRITERS.)

Likewise, I've had a few stories and a few poems in Russian, but not yet a book (I had sold a book in Russian, but the publisher had a heart attack and the company folded before it was published).

In terms of my writing, it's around 23 or 24 languages so far.

'Ere! I've got a story in THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF SERIOUSLY COMIC FANTASY too, but I've not had my copy of the Russian edn. Hm. I'll give it 'til Monday and then . . .

Oh, hang on a no. Are you in the US or Spain at the moment? If Spain, then I guess I'll be waiting a bit longer.

I'm in Madrid.

Not sure if transatlantic copies have been sent off yet or not, or if they'll all go in one batch and then be reshipped from somewhere stateside...

Mike, bless him, usually ships them individually. Although sometimes the mails from the UK to here in NJ can be quicker than those from the UK to Western Europe (sometimes they can be quicker even than a first-class letter sent between two places within the UK!), most often, obviously, they're not.

Years ago editor David Barrett sent out copies of the Hebrew edition of his antho Digital Dreams. The only two authors who could identify their stories with any measure of certainty were myself and Storm Constantine: mine was by a good chalk the longest story in the book, Storm's the second longest, and all the rest significantly shorter. As to whether they were faithful translations . . .?
