Grandmother

It seems my grandmother never made it home after rosh hashanah dinner last night; she collapsed on the sidewalk just outside her building. Two passing motorists each stopped (in busy NYC traffic) and got help, namely my aunt and uncle who live a block away, and although my grandmother seems to be just fine she's still in the hospital for more tests and observation (it's not a heart attack, probably wasn't a stroke either, and she ever lost consciousness although she did hit her head against the sidewalk). Naturally, the entire family is unsettled.

Unfortunately, my trips back to NY tend not to coincide with when she's in residence there (like many New Yorkers of a certain age--to give you an idea, I'll be thirty seven in two weeks--she spends the winters in Florida to escape the inclement weather) although I did get to spend a lot of time with her in July when I was back for a visit.

Maybe I should plan another trip to Florida, though, even if it's only to go see her (last time I went was when ICFA was still in Fort Lauderdale).

I hope your grandmother makes a speedy recovery and I'm glad she didn't do any major damage.

Wonderful to hear that she was helped by a couple of passing motorists who stopped to do the right thing.

And yes, do go to see her or schedule a semiregular call. We only see my dad (he's close to her age) once a year, but I do try to call at least once every two weeks. I don't want to have things forever unsaid that I wanted to tell him and I do want to let him know that even though he's nearly 90, his kid still thinks he has things worth saying and advice worth listening to.

It may be the only true gift we can ever give another.

Gah, that sucks, especially since you're far away and can't see for yourself.

I'm glad it wasn't a heart attack or stroke. It's good she got help so quick and I'm sure they'll be able to figure out what happened at the Hospital and fix it if it needs fixing. There are a number of reasons why someone elderly could collapse like that and a lot of them aren't really big time health problems.
