Elimination diet
Jan. 21st, 2008 07:44 pmI have for a number of months been having recurring unexplained bouts of hives, generally in the afternoon/evening.
And I think I may be developing a gluten intolerance so I am experimenting with an elimination diet.
(I am on Day 2 so far, but so far last night was the first night in a long while that I didn't have an episode of hives.)
I went and bought a bunch of gluten free biscuits and so on today. So far the first packet I've tried actually tastes good, although it has a somewhat powdery aftertaste. The gluten-free wassen-manque is fine if somewhat bland. We'll see what happens tonight.
I am leaving on Saturday for 2 weeks in the States, so getting medical confirmation may have to wait until I'm back in Madrid and settled in again.

Date: 2008-01-21 07:00 pm (UTC)watch for hidden glutens in gravys and sauces - most are thickened with flour - also watch for crusts that are made of some kind of crumble...a big culprit are soy sauce products and hidden MSG and of course, worse of all is pasta - simply stop ALL pasta - you may have intolerance to many different grains so you have to remove all and then test each - often rice ends up okay and potatoes (for starch) are usually okay, some people are okay with corn - as you go to the wheat you will usually find more symptoms - a good check is to see if you have congestion while eating anything - also, keep in mind that BEER is full of grains...

Date: 2008-01-21 07:29 pm (UTC)I knew about many of those but not all
I've always reacted poorly to msg, and have already been aware that I respond badly to non-organic wheat free soy sauces. I'm also not a big gravy or sauce eater in any case.
(I'm also a vegetarian, so not so many things're served with gravy.)
What I don't know is if it's all grains, or some of them, or even if this is indeed the problem. (Evidently, talking to my parents last night, I was milk and wheat intolerant as an infant.)
Will keep track of congestion and so on.
Thanks again for the tips.

Date: 2008-01-22 08:29 pm (UTC)Was waiting until I had confirmation before asking for more concrete advice/help.
I have doctor's visit tomorrow, but won't be able to do the bloodwork until the day after at the earliest.
And then I'm gone for two weeks so don't know when I'll hear back with results.
Sigh.

Date: 2008-01-22 02:55 pm (UTC)Once you have been on a gluten free diet, you have to eat a hell of a lot of gluten to get a positive blood test. My Dad made this mistake and while it is obvious he is gluten intolerant, he's never been able to get a postive blood test.
Start eating loads of bread and book yourself in for the blood test.
Re the cookies; most gluten free cookies contain nuts.
