OK, how come none of you ever told me about her before?

I read CITY OF PEARL yesterday and am already halfway through CROSSING THE LINE.

(I'm glad I had the first three all together and here in Madrid, a gift from her US editor a few years ago that I've only finally gotten to since no one had earlier said how very good they are.)

I did and I do. The woman is amazing. Try her Star Wars novels as well. Premise: exactly what kind of shits produce clone warriors with short life spans in the name of "good"? And what happens to the clone warriors? Aren't they people?

I guess we all thought you already knew about Karen Traviss...

Because we assume you've read everything! :)

I've been regularly reporting on her books in my 'reading posts' over the past several years.

I know, you posted about one of her Star Wars books recently, which made me dig these out from behind the other stack of books that had accumulated in front of them and bump them up in my to-read queue.

But I still wasn't quite aware of what they were or why they were good.

Oh, the whole series starting with CITY OF PEARL is some of the BEST writing out there; it's really amazing hard science fiction with strong believable characters - the whole focus is the characters, which something you almost never see. I think she's an astounding writer.

We read CIty of Pearl in my SF book club and I've been hooked ever since. Her subsequent books in the series essentially pick up where the previous one ends, but each one reaches a natural climax and resolution due to character driven elements. Her take on alien sexualities is also fascinating (reminiscent of Vonda McIntyre's Starfarers series). Meanwhile the overall plot keeps building and I'm expecting a big payoff when she finally wraps it all up!

Oh, that's promising: I have had City of Pearl for a while but haven't cracked it yet. Good to know!

She's in my to-be-read pile, and she just got moved up!
