Word Games
Dec. 14th, 2007 10:27 pmOK, so the best thing about Facebook is being able to play Bogglific against other people.
As many of you already know, I'm a fan of Boggle (especially over Scrabble, since Boggle is about finding cool words without needing to have strategy) and here in Spain don't find a lot of people who are sufficiently English-proficient with whom to play.
According to Facebook:
I am currently ranked 187th of 31,443.
Not bad at all, methinks, especially out of all those other players.
I'm best at the 5x5 game, mostly because there are all those 3 letter words that no one ever uses except in word games that I have never memorized and won't and so I regularly lose to people who know all of them even if they miss all the longer and cooler words in a given 4x4 board.
I do play all 4 possible games though (4x4 and 5x5 both the full 3 minutes and the 45 second quickies) which is not the best thing for my ranking, but is the most fun (variety, challenge, etc.)
I definitely notice, though, that a lot of time I used to spend reading I now spend playing online.
I do think this is just a phase, but at least the games relax me and distract me in a good way (also sometimes when I need to do work but that's a separate issue).

Date: 2007-12-15 03:08 am (UTC)I think my recent watching of Korean dramas (kdramas) serves a similar function to your casual gaming phase--it's eaten some of my much-valued reading time, but for the nonce it's a helpful distraction during which my brain can relax a bit and work differently a bit. hmm. Hadn't thought of it in quite that way till reading your post; otherwise, I had been thinking mostly that I should be trying to balance all my possible hobbies. (Well, not quite, but sort of.)
