BOOKS

Yesterday, I brought 9 books to the local second-hand bookstore to exchange for credit. Unfortunately, I left with 7 books in exchange. Unfortunate, not because this is a bad exchange (it's quite good!), but because I'm trying to lighten the load, as it were, of stuff, and would've been happy to convert stuff into the credit slip for a while.

I'd left with only 5 books, at first, but then found two Norah Lofts titles in the 1 Euro box at the exit, although I forget if these were among the ones that had been recommended to me. Gothics fans: what do y'all think of NETHERGATE and KNIGHT'S ACRE?

I also picked up Daphne Du Maurier's first novel, THE LOVING SPIRIT.

CLOTHES

I also brought two large bags of clothes to a friend's house, where he has two young Moroccan boys living with him. A lot of things I no longer can fit into (I still had a ridiculous number of pants with 28 inch waists), or things I simply don't wear (shiny club-going things). They were very happy with almost all of it, from the clubbing clothes to more formal stuff that they've never had before. And anything they don't want for themselves, they'll share with other immigrant friends of theirs.

I am horrible at throwing things away, but it's nice to see them getting some use and being valued.

WORK

Yesterday morning I wound up being fired from a publishing project quite unexpectedly. This was, naturally, upsetting, but in the end it is probably the only solution since the owner and I have not been able to agree on how things should be run. I hope we do manage to maintain, in the long run, our friendship, although I imagine things will be a bit rocky in the short term.

The most difficult thing, for me, is that I am still loyal to the idea of the project, and to the titles I was working on for it, and it's hard for me to let go, even if I'm not being paid to take care of them any longer. I've made suggestions for possible people or partners to keep the project or at least some of the titles alive. What I have to realize is that it's not out of my hands and have no further involvement in the project. (Although since some of them are based on personal relationships, I am half-involved in terms of my reputation/relationship with those external people.)

I hadn't realized it until I started writing this post about yesterday's various fluxes or changes or exchanges, but in some ways, and trying to look on the bright side, this does wind up leaving me with one less work-obligation, although it is perhaps one of the last ones I would've wanted to jettison from my schedule. The end result, though, is fewer overall commitments. I've still got a ways to go to clearing the decks, and as a full-time freelancer I will need to line up new projects/commitments very soon, but for now I plan to continue tying up loose ends, some of which have been languishing for a long time, as much as possible.

I'm sorry about the work lay-off. Remember, it is true that when one door closes, another opens, especially if you knock on a whole lot of them.

Courage!

Thanks.

I'll start knocking again next year.

Those aren't two of Norah Lofts' best, I am afraid.

Sigh.

No wonder they were in the 1 Euro bin, then.

Oh well.

Sorry to hear about the tricky work situation - hope all calms down soon. Nice to have good old Norah Lofts mentioned though - that brings back happy memories!
