15 hours of transit but I am at last in Florida, ensconced at my grandmother's apartment, where miraculously I've found an open wifi connection.

I'd forgotten that Florida is so flat and spread out.

And most buildings are shorter than the surrounding trees.

The flight to Miami is much longer than I'm used to (9 and half hours). As usual, screw ups on my vegetarian meal: my return on iberia has a veggie meal reserved, but not this trip on American Airlines. But there was a nice flight attendant who got me a really good spinach salad from first class.

My seat mate works on one of the most curious internet jobs I have ever come across: he is a professional online poker player. And it makes enough for him to live on and support his girlfriend.

None of the American airlines seem to offer food of any sort anymore. My girlfriend and I carry on all our food - even if we are traveling for a LOOONG time. We've learned after too many crabby attacks (that would be me, freaking out about not having anything to eat). It's ridiculous how much they are charging now for a sandwich.

I hope you have a nice time in Miami!

I always travel with food, too.

Used to travel with a thermos of oolong tea, too, but now of course one's not allowed to travel wi th liquids, sigh.

One just has to be careful to eat everything if it's fruit or such, before going through customs!

I've been stymied by all the new rules, too! We haven't had a problem taking fruit through - although my gf is paranoid and sometimes we do eat it, but I figure if I bought it in a grocery store it's probably not going cause a problem. Only in our recent trip to the Galapagos was it really an issue :P.

Online poker is very lucrative *if* you are a good player. So many people that play online just throw their money at you. I don't have the patience to do it full time, but I wish I did.

He was in some run of the mill job, and realized he was making as much or more than his job paid paying poker online, so he decided to give it a go full time, and they also moved from England to a small town in Extremadura (rural Spain) so their cost of living is even lower.

I guess I just hadn't ever met a modern day card shark before, so the very concept took me by surprise a bit. :-)

My sister's new boyfriend is a professional horse-race gambler, mostly on the internet. He spent about 2 weeks last year on his day job, the rest of the time gambling and making enough to pay off his mortgage.

He seems nice but dull and I'm trying to accept that if this is how he chooses to make a living and it's legal then it's is none of my business...

I confess I did think the guy was a bit dull, but hey, if he's happy doing what he's doing, more power to him (and his life before did sound even duller).

Welcome to these shores! I'll be seeing you soon, at ICFA.

Ah, airplane food. As Ellen unpacks whatever we've brought to eat, and the smell of leftover home-made Chinese (or cheese and chutney, or even tuna salad) wafts through the air, we've had people turn around, sniffing, from three rows away, and glare jealously.

It's not that hard to make a sandwich. And we're always leaving in a tearing hurry, with the car service idling at the curb and bits of clothing dangling from the suitcase. You just have to really want to do it.
