Trips/Planning
Mar. 7th, 2007 11:31 pmI still haven't finished unpacking (or at last, dealing with the paperwork and mail and everything I schlepped back from NYC) and now I need to pack again for my flight on Saturday morning to Florida for the International Conference on the Arts.
I feel so unprepared for this trip in a few days, but most of today has been sent requesting appointments for the Bologna Book Fair NEXT month, since it's already very late to be requesting appointments with any publishers (unless they're Spanish, and we already see most of those locally anyway, although I did email one in Barcelona since it'll be easier for us to meet with her there since neither Sara nor I have plans to visit BCN in the immediate future).
Luckily, since Sara and I go to the bookfair every year, we have sort of standing appointments with some publishers, who expect to see us every year (some we are already working with, others who are interested but we're just waiting for the right project to appeal to everyone, etc.)
Since the IBBY exhibit of Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities which features our book ¿LEES UN LIBRO CONMIGO? will debut at the Fair, that's helping open a few doors (to publishers who I think might actually be interested in the book).
I wind up writing individualized letters to every publisher, which I think leads to a better pitch since I'm trying to match what we do (or want to do) with what they have published, and I think it shows that we do know who they are and why we want to work with them, etc. instead of a generic "I have a book, why don't you publish it in your country?" type approach that I'm sure many people send. It's effective, but exhausting; at the same time, I enjoy doing it, it's just a question of having the time to prepare thoroughly and so on, and lately I feel like I'm doing my White Rabbit impression and am running late to everything.
I did at least find my bathing suit for Florida, though! :-)
