dashes in Spain

Thanks all for the advice on dashes and commas in English.

I had a feeling it was problematic, but I've also normalized to how things look in Spanish, where dialogue is indicated with dashes, not quotes, and punctuation is always carried over until after the speech tags.

--This would be an example --he said--, of how Spanish dialogue would look.

There are no closing dashes at the end of a bit of dialogue. The weird thing is how periods are also placed after the speech tags:

--This is how you do it --she told me--. Anything else is so wrong!

And if there's a question:

--Are you sure that's right? --I asked her--. Because I think it looks odd.

Anyway, this all leaves me a bit confused when I'm trying to recall what is correct in English. :-)
