Mar. 30th, 2005 01:39 amWent to see Wim Wenders' film LAND OF PLENTY (I think that's what the title is in English) tonight. Extremely obvious, I thought, which is disappointing, because I more-or-less agree with Wenders' politics, in general. But he was making very message-heavy statements from a few minutes into the film, and the characters weren't interesting enough to carry it off, alas (especially the AMELIE-looking ingenue, who just couldn't act at all).
I want better entertainment, even from a propaganda flick (especially when preaching to the converted).
It was what I call an ex-pat feel-good flick: one of those portraits of America that makes one glad that one has left...
The friend I went to see it with said he was glad to have gone, even though he didn't like the film, because it was one of those mediocre films that don't put many demands on the viewer, so he spent most of the flick thinking about his novel-in-progress, and figuring out how not to say certain things as Wenders hit us, the audience, with Message after Message.
At least it was a free screening, so the pain was lessened than if we'd had to shell out $10.50!
