I should have guessed it would turn out to be one of these days when I got down tot he café below Phillip's apartment and waited on line and they were out of bagels. Inauspicious start.

Actually, I should not have heeded Phillip's blasé-Frankfurter advice of why schlepp the umbrella when it was so sunny. Because it was indeed a lovely if chilly morning when I left the apartment.

But today was the first day of the bookfair and so of course it started raining around lunchtime.

I find the fair to be very low energy so far, and all of my meetings were more or less pointless, and so many people I had hoped to see are not exhibiting this year (even many German publishers). Hmmm. And harumpf.

Was at the Fair until 7pm. Am blessedly alone now, at Phillip's place, and may just go by mself to the little asian noodle shop nearby (Mösch Mösch) with my Marian Keyes book and not have to talk to anyone for a few hours. For now I've just made a pot of high mountain oolong and plan to sip that and rest a bit.

Then later, if it is not too wet, I may schlepp down to Bar Central, see if my host and/or his beau and/or other folks I know are around.

Then tomorrow it starts all over again!

One of the nice surprises was stumbling across the stand of some friendly women from India who run a feminist publishing house called Kali for Women. Among their many interesting books are a pair of story collections by Vandana Singh, who some of you know as an SF writer for adults. She will also be publishing a YA SF collection with them next spring.

Rights are available for other English-speaking territories (or non-English ones, too!) although perhaps some enterprising sort might order a slew of copies in time for, say, Wiscon 30, where I am sure many people would be interested in them...

I left the catalog at the bookfair today because of the inclement weather, but can post the website info and so on next week when I am back in Madrid and unpack everyhthing I schlepp home, should anyone be interested.
