THE RECYCLED CITIZEN by Charlotte MacLeod (part of her Sarah Kelling Kelling mystery series; I've already read the books before and after this, but they're fun)

THE GRUB-AND-STAKERS MOVE A MOUNTAIN by MacLeod writing as Alisa Craig. Have never tried any of her pseudonymous mysteries, but figured I'd give this a try.

DOCTORED EVIDENCE by Donna Leon (yay!)

NEVER HIT A JELLYFISH WITH A SPADE by Guy Browning. British radio commentator's mini-essays on etiquette. Looked readable enough. It's the same US publisher as EATS, SHOOTS & LEAVES so has the inevitable comparison. Of course, I already got Lynn Truss' next book, which is on manners, although a friend is reading it before sending it on to me.

TRAVELS WITH MY CHICKEN by Martin Gurdon. Another reprint from the UK, this is the book about his book tour for HEN AND THE ART OF CHICKEN MAINTENANCE. OK, so I liked the title of the previous book. I also, as some of you already know, once toured Europe with two turtles in my backpack. And, when I was a wee thing living out on Long Island, had numerous chickens as pets. (Most notable in stories people may have heard was a big white rooster named Alpo, because it used to eat out of my sister's rottweiler's bowl and my father always used to jokingly say that one day that bird was going to be dog food anyway... In winter, if Alpo was cold he'd peck on the kitchen door until someone let him in.)

Two Jewish titles:

LIPSHITZ SIX, OR TWO ANGRY BLONDES by T. Cooper, best known for T's first novel SOME OF THE PARTS. This I'll probably give my friend Keith since I never read the first book (which was pubbed by Akashic, this is forthcoming from Dutton).

NEWS FROM THE NEW AMERICAN DIASPORA by Jay Nuegeboren, stories of American Jewsin exile. As one myself, I figured I would take a look at the stories.

A whole slew of writing- or language-related books:

THE UNFOLDING OF LANGUAGE by Guy Deutscher. Evolution of language, in the grand picture.

WRITTEN OUT: HOW SEXUALITY IS USED TO ATTACK WOMEN'S ORGANIZING by the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission.

READING, WRITING, AND LEAVING HOME: LIFE ONTHE PAGE by Lynn Freed. Have never read anything else by her. But this is a composite memoir in the form of various essays about writing, and looked interesting enough to spend $.97 plus tax on. (Now you know where my impulse threshhold is.)

NEGOTIATING WITHTHE DEAD: A WRITER ON WRITING by Margaret Atwood.

and the anthology BOOKMARK NOW: WRITING IN UNREADERLY TIMES edited by Kevin Smuckler.

Adn two picture books:

THE ROBOT ZOO by John Kelley, which is actually a natural history title. Its subtitle is A MECHANICAL GUIDE TO HOW ANIMALS WORK. Basically, it uses robot animals to show how animals are put together. May give to my father.

and TREE OF BIRDS by Susan Meddaugh, which reminded me very much of my mother, because it is all about saving injured tropical birds. And the art is just so cute! (Lots of grumpy parrots who want the missing bird--still recovering from injured wing--back.) I might keep this for myself after all.
