Next year

Hey, everything's way early next year!

I've been filling in my new Calendar for Academic year 2005-2006 and just double-checked and looked up the various conferences and bookfairs I know I will be attending and some I might like to try.

And not only is the Bologna Book Fair in March in 2006 instead of in April as it has been the past three years (this I already knew) but BEA in Washington DC is in the middle of May instead of the beginning of June. Which actually means it's before Wiscon this year. Curious.

I don't know if this is a good thing or not in terms of figuring out my travel plans, although I'd really like to get back to Wiscon next year, if I can figure out how to afford it.

(When BEA is in Chicago, it's much easier, because I just fly Madrid to Chicago, which is an Iberia hub and a direct flight, and then catch a ride or bus it to Madison.)

I'd like to hit IAFA's International Conference of the Fantastic in the Arts one year, but the timing is probably too close since it's March 15-19 and I need to be in Bologna March 24th, since I'm running a conference (the SCBWI International Conference, not sure if I've mentioned yet that I got talked into this??) March 25th and 26th...

I'd also like to go to Angouleme one year, the comics festival in the South of France. But it's January 26-29. And SCBWI NY is the following weekend: Feb 4-5. Not impossible. But it seems like next year is filled with interesting conferences, on back-to-back weekends, and often a continent apart!

I am feeling the need to do less work-related travel (which most of these bookfairs are, even though I really enjoy some of them) and more recreational travel (not the easiest thing given my current finances).

Like last year's trips to Berlin, which I enjoyed--even the second with its disastrous affair (or non-affair as the case may be)--as opposed to Amsterdam which was an attempt to tack a vacation on to a convention (and didn't quite work, because I was going where the convention was as opposed to where I wanted to go given my druthers).

Meanwhile, I may be in NYC in late Sept for various and sundry reasons (rendezvous with a friend who'll be passing through town then, family health stuff, etc.), thanks to my grandmother's frequent flyer miles. Although right now, the itinerary has me flying via Amsterdam with a 5 hour layover--gah! And on top of everything else, that flight leaves Madrid at 6:45 a.m. Sigh. Hopefully it can be changed, but there isn't much availability in terms of ffq seats at this stage...
