What an expensive hassle, get home turned out to be.

My friend Panos showed up a bit early to pick me up, maybe 9:25am, and was all "we have all the time in the world." He schlepped my backpack with laptop plus my wheeling suitcase the 10 minutes to Central Station. We bought tickets to Schipol.

Then we discovered that a train had derailed and there were no trains into or out of Central Station.

A 45 Euro taxi trip later, we arrived at the station.

I didn't have to exert myself too much in terms of actually manhandling my luggage msyelf, and in Barrajas a kind stranger got my suitcase off the conveyor belt and onto the trolley for me.

On the way home from Madrid, I tipped the cabbie extra for him to carry my suitcase up over the entryway steps instead of just leaving me on the curb.

What a relief to come home to such warmth! It was 40 degrees celsius when I arrived (maybe 103 Fahrenheit?). And sunny! No clouds! No rain!

Of course, everything was closed because it being a religious holiday, but still...

Very happy to be home again. To have my bed, which will not be so rough on my back and injured side. To have my teapot (and my tea--I ran out of the decent stuff early on in the trip). My mac mini. My phone. All my lovely bookses. And so on.

Had meant to hit the albert heijn once more before I left and pick up some veggie ham, but... c'est la vie.

Read more than half of MRS. POLLIFAX ON THE CHINA STATION on the flight. Will likely now finish that off and then go to bed.

And tomorrow, back to work!

(I did actually do a wee bit of work yesterday, so I didn't feel quite so useless for having brought my laptop all that way only to never turn it on...)
