Just finished Anne McCaffrey's PEGASUS IN FLIGHT. Feh. Pure adolescent wish-fulfillment fantasy with no substance to it.

Before that, read Cynthia Felice's DOWNTIME. This had some more surprises in it, especially since unlike all of her other books, the romance this time is between people who already have a shared past, as opposed to people who don't want to be attracted to one another. They have their romance-type black moments and problems keeping them apart, but it's a different emotional arc than the other novels of hers I read. The story, meanwhile, was very reminiscent of Janet Kagan's HELLSPARK in some ways, although not as well done, I thought. Although it does have a satisfying, not-typical ending.

Before that I started reading Charliane Harris' Sooki Stackhouse vmapire books and quite liking them. I'd just read a Laurell Hamilton, BLOODY BONES, and found it a step up from the abovementioned McCaffrey, but pretty lame. The Harris novels have a much better voice and plotting and she handles the multiple romantic tensions better (it felt a bit like the Janet Evanovich series, but with her attentions being divided between two vampires and a werewolf instead of a cop and a bounty hunter, and the character is more naive). I read DEAD UNTIL DARK and then skipped to CLUB DEAD because haven't turned up a copy of LIVING DEAD IN DALLAS here in Spain and didn't want to wait. I think a 4th has come out in hardcover recently. They're not ground breaking in any way, but nice characters and fun reads.

I read David Levithan's BOY MEETS BOY (not to be confused with my own anthology fo the same title, published some years earlier). A fun enough YA, with some nice moments, but I thought James Howe's THE MISFITS deals with a lot of the same stuff in a much better way. Wittier, better plotted, more moving. Although MISFITS is middle grade and this is YA. It was perfectly nice. But since I'd already read the Howe, it left me a little...flat.

I've gone through all the V.I. Warshawski novels I have on hand, and am quite liking the series as I continue. They're very meaty tomes, although I find myself apalled at all the fraud and corruption and conspiracy and so on that gets revealed in them. Industry in the U.S.... Eep.

Now am deliberating what to read next; I've got a bunch of Jonathan Kellermans stacked up, but am not in the right mood for something so dark right now. But the lousy McCaffrey has left a sort of sour taste in my mouth.

Lush soap

I discovered the Lush store in Madrid yesterday, after having heard about them for the first time when I was in Berlin a few weeks ago. So I wanderedin and bought a sliver of Bohemian, which is their lemon soap. And I've been washing my hands and face all day because I love the smell of it.

I resisted going back today (it's maybe 4-5 blocks from my place) to buy more things--I found the store a little overwhelming at first while trying to figure out what everything was for and all.
